Fuller Ultraviolet has provided Ultraviolet Surface Treatment Equipment for a variety of industries. The use of ultraviolet germicidal lamps for surface disinfection of products can be accomplished safely and effectively in a tunnel configuration. Protection of foods, pharmaceutical and other products affected by micro-organisms often centers on the disinfection of air with ultraviolet to prevent contamination of the product with airborne micro-organisms. In many instances the product may be directly treated with ultraviolet germicidal energy in order to reduce the microbial count.
Proper surface disinfection is achieved by determining the required amount of micro-watts generated to destroy the target pathogen, then taking the amount of time the product is allowed be exposed and putting that into the configuration.
The design and placement of lamp fixtures inside a tunnel arrangement dictate mounting UVC lamps in strategic locations to properly treat the surfaces to be disinfected. This may mean lamps being mounted horizontally or vertically to achieve proper resonance time.
The success of surface disinfection depends greatly on the consistency of the surface of the material to be disinfected. In general, the UVC rays may directly strike the microbial contaminants to achieve lethal destruction. If the bacteria or mold spores are hidden below the surface of the material or are not in the direct path of the UVC rays, they will not be destroyed. Where product is riding on a conveyor through the tunnel, the bottom of the product will obviously not receive direct exposure. Provisions for this will be necessary. For tunnels where product is suspended from moving overhead, bottom treatment is easily accomplished.
Fuller recommends initial testing of product, prior to presentation of a proposal. Testing can be accomplished in one of two ways; product is sent to Fuller for in-house testing, then sent back for count testing, or Fuller will send a test ﬁxture or cabinet to manufacturer, where test parameters may be more detailed and complete.
UV determination is accomplished by treating surface for a speciﬁc period of time. This time period is based upon the amount of exposure the facility can guarantee during the line process. Such testing will insure that target organisms can be successfully destroyed within the operational parameters of the process.
